The Champions League is the highest ranked club football tournament in Europe and a competition where the best teams from every league around the continent face each other. The tournament is ruled by UEFA, the governing body of all European football competitions. Pre 1992 the tournament was called the European Cup which was played for the first time in 1958.

There are 32 teams in the group stage of the Champions League. The teams are qualifying for the tournament by their performance in the domestic league. In the higher ranked leagues up to four teams can qualify for the tournament while there’re less spots to fight for in the lower ranked leagues. The group stage of the Champions League normally starts in September, followed by the Playoffs which are running from February until the final in May/June.

Road to the final

The Champions League fixtures starts already in July with the qualification games. After that 32 teams will be drawn into eight different groups with four teams in each group. Each team face every other team in the group twice, home and away. The two best teams from every group advance to the knock-out stage.

The final is played at a pre-determined stadium, normally in the end of May or beginning of June. If the final game is tied after 90 minutes the game will go into extra time and later penalties if needed.
