Team name

The Chennai Super Kings (commonly abbreviated to CSK)) are one of the original founder members of the IPL, and the one of the most successful in its history – no team has a better win percentage. The team is owned by a subsidiary of India Cements.
In 2015 CSK were banned from the IPL for two years because of the involvement of the team’s owners in an illegal betting scheme dating back to 2013.

The value of the franchise is estimated at close to US $104 million, which makes them the second most valuable IPL franchise after the Mumbai Indians.

The logo

Their logo consists of a roaring lion with the CSK superimposed on it topped by a crown, whilst their colours are primarily yellow with hints of blue and orange. The team song is the “Whistle Podu”. Their fans are called the “Yellow Army”.

Home ground

The CSK home ground is the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (known colloquially as the “The Chepauk”) located in Chennai. It is the oldest stadium in India which is in continuous use and has a current capacity of 50,000.

History

CSK have contested all but two editions of the IPL, missing out in 2016 and 2017 whilst they served their ban.
They have won the title three times – in 2010, 2011, and 2018 – and hold the record for the most appearances in the play-offs (ten) and the final (eight).

In addition, CSK won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2010 and 2014.
However, 2020 was a disappointing year – they failed to reach the play-offs for the first time, and finished seventh in the regular season.

Michael Hussey

Former Australian opener Hussey has the best batting average of any man to play for CSK, and scored the second century in the history of the competition making 116 against KXIP.
Post retirement he went on to become their batting coach.

Murali Vijay

Vijay played for the team between 2009 and 2013, during which time he became the first Indian to score two IPL centuries. When CSK won the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa in 2010, Vijay was the top scorer in the tournament.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Although he has gone onto play for a number of other franchises, Indian spinner Ashwin remains the man who has taken the most wickets for the CSK, who he played for between 2008 and 2015..

MS Dhoni

The legendary former Indian captain has been with CSK since he was bought in the first season auction for a record fee, except for 2016 and 2017, when he transferred his allegiance temporarily to Rising Pune Supergiant whilst the franchise was serving its ban.
He has captained then to title success in 2910, 2011 and 2018 and also to their two Champions League titles.

Suresh Raina

The current vice-captain of CSK, although he missed the entire 2020 season played in the UAE for personal reasons.
In 2019 Raina became the first man to score 5,000 IPL runs, and has been named in the best IPL XI on a number of occasions. His record of having scored both the highest runs and taken the most catches in a single IPL season in 2010 still stands to this day.

Faf du Plessis

South African batsman du Plessis joined CSK in 2011 and had remained with them ever since, apart from a two-year period with Rising Pune Supergiant during the ban. He is a consistent run-scorer for CSK, and was until recently, the South African captain.
