Team name

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (commonly abbreviated to RCB) are one of the original founder members of the IPL. They are owned by United Spirits, the second largest spirits company in the world, and are named after one of its brands, Royal Challenge.

The team has the unique distinction of having made both the highest and the lowest score in IPL history – 263/5 and 49 all out.

The logo

Although their logo has undergone several changes over the years, the current design features a lion with the name of the franchise beneath. Their regular kit features red trousers and a red and black shirt, although they do have an alternate kit which is green and black. The team logo is “Game for More” whilst their anthem is “Play Bold”.

History

RCB have contested all 13 editions of the IPL to date, but have never won it, earning them the tag of “under achievers”. They have, however, reached the Final on three occasions.

In 2009 they lost to the Deccan Chargers by 6 runs.
Then two years later they topped the regular season table and reached the final again, only to be easily beaten by CSK in the end, losing by 58 runs.

Their most recent final appearance was in 2016 when SRH beat them by 8 wickets.
In 2020 they made the play-offs only to lose to SRH again in the eliminator game.

They also competed in the now defunct Champions Twenty20 with their best result coming in 2011, when again they finished runners-up.

Anil Kumble

The third highest wicket taker of all time in test cricket, Kumble came out of retirement to play for RCB in the first three seasons of the IPL, and became captain. In 2009 he took 5/5 in a match against the Rajasthan Royals and ended that season as the most successful spin bowler in the tournament.

Kevin Pieterson

Former England international player Pieterson was a highly destructive batsman on his day, and still holds the record for the fastest player to reach 2,000 runs in ODIs. When he was bought by RCB in February 2009, he became, along with England teammate Andrew Flintoff, the highest-paid IPL player. England commitments cut short his time with the franchise.

Mitchell Starc

Starc has the distinction of having bowled the fastest ever recorded delivery in test cricket – 160.4 km against Ross Taylor of New Zealand in 2015.
He was bought by RCB in 2014 and became their main strike bowler, and was named in the team of the season for 2015. He left RCB to focus on international cricket.

Virat Kohli

The captain of RCB and the Indian skipper, Kohli is the current highest-paid player in the IPL. In the 2016 season he was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Series, and also won the Orange cap as that year’s top run scorer.
He is the top IPL run scorer of all time, and the only man to score four centuries in one IPL season.

AB de Villiers

South African de Villiers was named as one of the five cricketers of the decade by Wisden last year, and captained his country in al formats of the game. He has scored 3 centuries for RCB and become one of their most consistent performers, noted for his ability to close out matches in tense situations.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Leg spinner Chahal became the first Indian and only the second ever to take 6 wickets in a T20I when he picked up 6/25 against England in 2017. In December 220 he also became the first concussion substitute to be named Man of the Match after helping India beat Australia.
He has played or RCB since 2014 and was named in the IPL team of the season in both 2015 and 2016.
