The Kolkata Knight Riders (popularly abbreviated to KKR) are one of the original founder members of the IPL and the one of the most successful in its history. They are owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta.
Team name
The name of the team is derived from the popular US tv series of the 1980s, Knight Rider.
The ownership group also has a stake in the Caribbean Premier League side the Trinbago Knight Riders and has recently announced plans to establish a T20 league in the US.
The value of the franchise is estimated at close to US $90 million.
The logo
Their logo consists of a blazing Corinthian helmet in gold against a purple background, which are the two colours of their on-field livery. The motto of the team is “New Dawn, New Knights”.

The KKR home ground is the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata which has a current capacity of 86,000.

History
KKR have contested all 13 editions of the IPL to date, and have won the event twice in 2012 and again in 2014. They have also made the play-offs on four occasions, most recently in 2018.
In IPL 2020 they finished fifth for the second successive year.
In addition, KKR qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 three times, and were runners-up in 2014 in the last season it was contested.
Sourav Ganguly
Former captain of the Indian cricket team and now head of the BCCI, Ganguly was the original icon player for KKR and led the team in 2008 and 2010 (Brendon McCullum took charge in-between).
Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir was acquired in the Player Auction in 2011 and was made skipper of the team immediately. The highest paid IPL player in his day he captained the side to their two IPL successes and it was under him that they set the record that they set the record for the most consecutive wins in an IPL season (nine).
Jacques Kallis
One of the finest all-rounders of all-time, Kallis, who would later coach the franchise, played a major part in the 2012 title winning side, scoring 409 runs, and taking 15 wickets.
Pat Cummins
In the 2020 IPL auction KKR paid Rs 15.5crore to acquire the services of Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins, a record for a foreigner. He did not have the hoped-for impact in his first season but should spearhead their attack again in 2021.
Dinesh Karthik
Karthik succeeded Gambhir as KKR captain, and led to the team to the play-offs in his first season, later named in the team of the tournament for 2018. After struggling with his own form during the last IPL season he have up the job in favour of Eoin Morgan.
Eoin Morgan
Although Irish-born Morgan is the current ODI and T20I England captain and led them to World Cup success in 2019 when they beat New Zealand at Lords in a Super Over.
